Mico Has Earned Enviable and Well-Deserved Prestige

I AM delighted to join The Mico University College in celebrating its 185th anniversary!

As the oldest educational institution in our region, The Mico has earned enviable and well-deserved prestige and name recognition. All its course offerings and degree programmes are accredited by the University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) and provide students with an ample range of opportunities to expand their knowledge base.

I would like particularly to highlight the Pre-University Men's Programme (PUMP) which places unattached young men in a year of training, grants them meaningful access to mentorship and teaches both the professional and interpersonal skills necessary for their careers and personal lives. This programme is especially relevant and important as our society grapples with high levels of crime, much of which is carried out by and targeted towards young men.

Of note as well is The Mico's CARE Centre which diagnoses learning disabilities among students ages 12-18. The CARE Centre plays the critical role of helping parents and students understand their learning differences and needs, and how best to manage them.

As we continue to navigate through this pandemic, The Mico has proactively taken its course offerings online. I commend you for your continuing hard work to raise the standard of education in Jamaica, and to make quality education more accessible to our people.

Happy 185th anniversary, Mico!
